IN this post we are going to learn tips and tricks of Windows 8.1 .

  • BOOT TO DESKTOP

Microsoft has borrowed to the pressure from desktop users and given us an option to skip the START screen after logging in . However , this feature needs to be activated manually . Right click on the TASKBAR > PROPERTIES >  then switch to the Navigation tab .Under start screen tick the first option that says ‘ Go to the desktop instead of start ‘ . Then click on Ok or apply .

  • GET START BUTTON

In earlier version we were familiar with the Start button but as 8 version was launched , it disappeared. Windows 8.1 reintroduced a dumbed down Start button . Most popular app that provide this Start button – CLassic shell And its free . This app offers types of Start button – classic , two column and Windows 7.

  • QUICKER SHUTDOWN

Windows 8.1 retains the shortcut menu that appears when you right click in the bottom left hand corner of Desktop . With some new options . You can now shutdown the system from there, rather than going through the settings charm .

  • KEYBOARD SHORTCUTS

Many people still use mouse but keyboard short few useful combinations which will get you started .

– Windows key+ C (opens up charms menu)

– Windows key+ O (locks the orientation of screen )

– Windows key+Q (Open the Search charm to search everywhere or within an open app (if    the app supports app search) )

– Windows key +M (minimizes all windows and bring you back to the desktop)

– Windows key + H (open the share charm in any app you are currently in )

– Window key + F (open up search box to help find files)

-Window key + I (opens up the settings charm)

-Windows key‌  + Z (Show the commands available in the app)

-Windows key‌  + W (Open the Search charm to search settings)

-Windows  key  + K (Open the Devices charm)

-Windows  key + S (Open the Search charm to search Windows and the web)

-Windows key   + Ctrl + Tab  (Cycle through recently used apps)

-Windows  key‌  + spacebar  (Switch input language and keyboard layout)

-Windows key  + P  (Choose a presentation display mode)

-Windows  key  + R (Open the Run dialog box )

-Windows  key  + U (Open Ease of Access Center)

  • TURN OFF NOTIFICATION TO MINIMIZE DISTRACTION

If you want to get work done without being distracted by notifications Windows 8.1 has got you covered . Got to PC settings > Search & apps and make sure the Quiet hours switch is on

  • GO TO POWERSHELL AND DITCH COMMAND PROMPT

Right click on Windows icons in the taskbar brings up a list of power user commands using DOS -style commands you can replace CMD with Windows powershell .Go to Navigation properties >tick the box marked replace command prompt with windows powershell in the menu when i right click  the lower left corner .

  • APP TILES

Windows 8.1 gives you more control over the size of your apps tiles on the Start screen . Right click on a tile , choose Resize from the menu at the bottom and there are four different options to pick from Large ,Wide ,Medium and small.

  • DISPLAYS HOT CORNERS

In Windows 8.1 you need a third party tool or a registry hack to disable the hot corners around the edge of your screen .

  • SAVE TO SKYDRIVE

Windows 8.1 goes even further with skydrive integration than Windows 8 did , you can have all of your applications save t your Skydrive folder by default . Open change PC settings > choose skydrive and relevant settings is on the files tab .

  • SOUND THE ALARM

Windows 8.1 has a brand new alarms app that you can access from the Start screen  . You can put multiple alarms and choose from a variety of ringtone to wake you up or act as a reminder for something .
